Insurance, bills & appeals
Medical bills are confusing on purpose. Start by asking for itemized bills and an explanation of benefits for every claim — you’re entitled to them.
If a claim is denied, you can appeal. The denial letter explains why and how. Deadlines matter, so don’t sit on it — and don’t be afraid to ask the billing office or a patient advocate for help reading it.
Missed work & family leave
Time off to care for an injured child can feel impossible to afford — and impossible to avoid. Know what you’re entitled to before you need it.
Look into your state’s family leave laws, your employer’s policies, and whether the federal Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) applies to your situation. Even a short conversation with HR can surface options you didn’t know existed.
Finding financial help
When the bills pile up, help often exists closer than it seems: hospital financial assistance programs, local nonprofits, community funds, and disease-specific organizations.
Ask the hospital’s billing office about charity care. Ask your child’s care team about social workers — they know the local programs. And ask other parents; word of mouth is how most of these get found.
